About Dr. Brian

My Approach to Recovery
I am Dr. Brian Smith, a licensed psychologist and founder of Hopewell Psychological Associates, PC. For more than fifteen years, I have had the privilege of walking alongside individuals and couples through depression, anxiety, OCD, trauma, relationship difficulties, and life's most challenging seasons. (For therapy related to these issues and general mental health, please visit Hopewell). My work through Gathered Embers Counseling & Recovery is a specialized extension of that calling.
As a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) Candidate under supervision, I work primarily with men seeking freedom from compulsive sexual behaviors and the patterns that sustain them. While unwanted sexual behaviors are often the reason people initially seek help, recovery rarely stops there. Together, we work to understand the deeper emotional, relational, and developmental experiences that have shaped these patterns while building practical strategies that support lasting change. We also examine the profound impact these struggles have on spouses, marriages, and families.
Recovery is about far more than abstinence. It is about becoming a person who lives with greater honesty, accountability, empathy, integrity, humility, and genuine connection with others.
Looking Beneath the Surface
Through years of clinical work, I have become increasingly convinced that many of our present struggles make more sense when we understand the experiences that shaped us.
Compulsive sexual behaviors often develop not simply because of desire, but because they become ways of coping with loneliness, anxiety, unresolved grief, childhood wounds, shame, stress, or emotional disconnection. While these behaviors may temporarily relieve distress, they ultimately deepen the very isolation they were trying to solve.
In therapy, we work together to understand those patterns—not to excuse harmful choices, but to create the insight and emotional awareness necessary for lasting recovery.
My approach integrates attachment theory, trauma-informed care, psychodynamic understanding, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and the structured recovery model developed through CSAT training. Some seasons of therapy focus on developing practical tools for managing urges, rebuilding accountability, and establishing healthy recovery routines. Other seasons involve slowing down to explore the deeper experiences that continue to influence the present. Both are essential parts of meaningful change.
Recovery Happens in Community
One of the greatest obstacles to recovery is isolation. Many men have spent years believing they must either hide their struggles or overcome them entirely on their own. Yet healing rarely occurs in secrecy. In addition to individual therapy, I offer recovery-focused group therapy because I believe healthy community creates opportunities for honesty, accountability, encouragement, and growth that individual work alone cannot fully provide. Recovery becomes stronger when people discover they no longer have to carry their burdens alone.
Faith & Recovery
Gathered Embers is a Christian counseling practice that integrates evidence-based treatment with a biblical understanding of recovery, restoration, and hope. My work is shaped by both a sound psychological approach and the Christian faith. I believe recovery involves not only changing behaviors but becoming more deeply rooted in honesty, humility, grace, and authentic relationships—with others and with God. Why "Gathered Embers"?
The name Gathered Embers reflects the hope that can emerge even after seasons of profound loss. For many individuals struggling with compulsive sexual behaviors, life can feel as though it has been reduced to embers. Shame, secrecy, and broken trust often leave people wondering what remains of the person they hoped to become.
For spouses, betrayal can create a similar experience. The discovery of hidden behaviors can leave a marriage, a family, and a sense of safety feeling as though they have been consumed by fire. Questions arise about what is real, whether healing is possible, and where hope can be found.
Yet embers also carry another meaning.
An ember is not the end of the story. Though it may appear small and fragile, it still holds the possibility of warmth, light, and renewed life. When embers are gathered together and carefully tended, they can become the beginning of restoration.
That image reflects the heart of this practice.
Healing rarely happens in isolation. It grows through honesty, supportive relationships, meaningful community, and, for those who seek it, the restoring grace of God. My hope is that Gathered Embers Counseling & Recovery will be a place where individuals begin to move beyond shame and secrecy toward lives marked by integrity, connection, and lasting hope.
Walking Forward Together
The image of gathered embers reminds me that even after fire has left destruction in its wake, warmth and new life are still possible. Recovery is rarely quick, and it is almost never linear. Yet I have seen individuals and families experience profound change through honesty, faithful work, supportive relationships, and the grace of God. If you're ready to begin that process, I would be honored to walk alongside you.
